Ready for the Steam Deck + R5.10u5 released!

After some feedback and assisting with getting a game to work with it, I can confidently say that the tool can create Steam Deck compatible builds. There was quite the guesswork to get stuff working (primarily with Steam Input. The Steamworks documentation didn't do a good explanation on how it latches on to the game), but recent updates have improved on that front. And looking on said feedback, I covered the bases for supporting Steam Deck out of the box. This update will change one more default setting to make it easier to bring over your game to the Deck (specifically, building a Steam Proton/WINE compatible build). This won't be applied if you are updating from an older patch, but you can edit the default settings via the tool.

Alongside this update, I'm adding experimental support for hardware encoding videos to AV1. This requires very recent hardware (AMD Radeon RX700/GeForce RTX 30/Intel Arc series and newer), but it will speed up the encoding. It's experimental, as I do need to do more work on it (including automating the selection of the appropriate encoder for your graphics card). If you are feeling a bit adventurous, feel free to test it out and give me some feedback.

Changelog:

  • Added Hardware Encoding support for converting videos to AV1.
    • In Windows, selecting the Hardware Encoder will use the GPU manufacturer's API (Quick Sync Video, NVENC, AMD VCE).
    • On Linux, Intel and AMD cards will use Video Acceleration API (usually used with Mesa drivers. Your distro may be using these drivers already).
    • This is a work in progress and there may be issues. If you don't want to deal with that, leave the option to Software.
  • Adjusted the default option for "Create a Steam Proton/WINE compatible build" to ON.
    • Note that this won't be applied to you automatically if you have updated from an older patch of R5.10.
  • Implemented RecyclableMemoryStream to both the tool and the bootstrapper, improving performance and memory usage.
  • In the package.json file, tool will apply the version number that is on the "Game Version" setting (found on Project Settings -> Customization -> Essential Information).
    • The "Game Version" option in the Metadata Editor was removed, as a result.
  • Adjusted some of the text in the tooltips.
  • Added tooltips for explaining the AV1 options.
